The VMG provides training, qualifications and continuing professional development opportunities for all members, irrespective of their age, stage in their career or role within the practice management and administration team. The organisation offers two highly regarded qualifications: the Veterinary Practice Administration Certificate (VPAC) for administrators, and the Certificate in Veterinary Practice Management (CVPM) for more experienced practice managers.

Members are also able to take part in a range of standalone CPD events, whether in the form of evening meetings, short seminars or events lasting one or more days. Nationally, these include the Organisation’s annual Congress, management days and CPD events, as well as practice management seminars at other veterinary association meetings. In addition, the VMG regional groups organise a range of meetings for their members, which are also open to those from outside the region.

Regional CPD events are facilitated by a network of Regional Organisers (ROs), who aim to hold regional meetings 2-3 times a year. ROs also feedback suggestions and comments from their local members to the Regional Co-ordinator and the VMG Board, and meet up yearly at the VMG Congress in order to share the experiences of their members and report on the success of their regional meetings.

The VMG Congress takes place annually towards the end of January, in association with the Society of Practicing Veterinary Surgeons (SPVS), with the VMG AGM taking place the evening before the congress opens. A number of different streams are available on both days, covering a wide range of management topics as well as those aimed at specific types of veterinary practice and at individuals new to either veterinary practice or to management. The congress also hosts a wide range of commercial exhibitors and offers social and networking events for all attendees.

Professional Qualifications

For those desiring more formal qualifications, the VMG offers the VPAC for practice administrative staff and individuals setting out on their practice management careers, and the CVPM for more experienced practice managers. Both qualifications are only available to VMG members, but associate members are able to study for their VPAC with no obligation to progress to becoming full members of the VMG once qualified. However, VPAC holders who wish to remain members of the VMG are obliged to take out full single or group membership if they wish to remain members.

The Certification and Training Committee

CPD events and the awarding of the VPAC are overseen by The Certification and Training Committee, who also make up the CVPM Examination Board. The committee comprises seven full members of the VMG, currently (2018):

  • Georgina Hills CVPM
  • Louise O’Hara CVPM
  • Roger Wilson
  • Philippa Davis CVPM

  • Kerry Scarlett CVPM

  • Liz Howes CVPM
